Guide · The format
What is a short drama?
A short drama is a full story — romance, revenge, a hidden billionaire — told in 60 to 100 episodes that each run a minute or two, shot vertically so you watch it the way you hold your phone. It's built for the swipe: a cliffhanger every episode, a season you can finish on a commute. 77,691 of them, across 24 apps, are indexed right here.

The format in one line
Take a soap opera, cut each scene to its sharpest 60–120 seconds, stack 70-odd of those into one bingeable story, and shoot it vertical for a phone screen. That's a short drama. No episode outstays its welcome, every one ends on a hook, and a whole series runs about as long as a single feature film.
They're sometimes called micro dramas, mini dramas, or vertical dramas — same format, different name. The defining traits are constant: vertical video, very short episodes, a lot of them, and a story engineered to make you tap 'next'.
Where short dramas came from
The format exploded in China, where it's called duanju (短剧), as a mobile-native answer to long streaming series — cheaper to make, faster to shoot, and tuned for phone-first viewing. It worked, and the model went global.
Now English-language apps like ReelShort, DramaBox, GoodShort and a dozen others produce and license short dramas for worldwide audiences, with the romance, revenge and billionaire lanes leading the way.
How they make money (and what's free)
Almost every short-drama app is freemium: the opening stretch of each drama — usually the first 10–20 episodes — plays free, then the rest unlock with coins or a subscription. A couple of apps, like RapidTV and FreeReels, are free the whole way through.
You never have to pay to find out whether a drama is worth it — the free window is long enough to get hooked (or not) before any paywall.
Short drama vs micro drama vs vertical drama
These are three names for the same thing. "Short drama" describes the episode length, "micro drama" is the industry/Western term, and "vertical drama" describes the 9:16 phone framing. If an app, article or app-store listing uses any of them, it means this format.
