Premise
Lu Niaoniao is pregnant when her father decides her marriage has to end. He has an adopted daughter, Lu Shengsheng, who wants Pei Lin for herself, and he insists Pei Lin's heart already belongs to her. Pei Lin skips their anniversary, blaming a contract, and Lu Niaoniao then catches Lu Shengsheng leaning in his arms. She agrees to the divorce, but only after making her father sign a will that bars Lu Shengsheng from ever marrying Pei Lin. That paper becomes the thread the whole hundred episodes pull on.
Seven years later the story jumps to a far darker place. Lu Niaoniao's health collapses while Pei Lin, retired from his career, prepares to take over the conglomerate. Then Lu Shengsheng announces their engagement. Lu Niaoniao coughs up blood, tells her daughter Manman to go find her grandfather, and dies shortly after. Manman walks into the engagement banquet clutching a family photo and asks to be recognized as kin.
Characters
Lu Niaoniao carries the setup. We see her mostly through what she gives up and what she writes into the will, so every choice she makes feels heavy. Pei Lin is the man who lets an old wound turn into a betrayal, and the show keeps him close enough that his excuses land badly. Lu Shengsheng is the adopted sister who got exactly what she asked for. The drama doesn't play her as a cartoon villain, though she drives most of the cruelty on screen.
Manman arrives at the banquet with nothing but a photograph, and she becomes the character who forces the adults to look at what they did. Her grandfather sits in the middle, the man who signed the paper and now has to live with what it meant. His arc is quieter than the others, but it's where the family's guilt is most visible.
Main arc
The opening episodes are about a marriage ended on someone else's word. The middle shifts into the family's power struggle, where the will and the engagement become leverage for everyone involved. Each side tries to protect its position, and each secret that surfaces costs someone more than the last.
The final stretch is the reckoning. Manman steps into the room with her photo, and the old lies start to crack in front of the people who told them. Like most long family dramas, the show runs on a steady rhythm of confrontations at dinners, banquets and company events, each one a little more public than the one before.
Themes & tropes
This is a family drama with a revenge spine. Its central question is how easily a parent's favoritism and a spouse's silence can cost someone everything, and whether a dead woman's legal paper can still protect her child after she's gone. Divorce drives the first act. Family Feud runs through nearly every household scene, and Revenge is built into the will itself.
Pay attention to how the show uses status. Humiliation at family gatherings is the genre's usual way of showing who holds power, and this drama leans on it heavily. The adopted-daughter angle adds a layer about who really belongs to a family and who only gets treated as if they do.
Why viewers watch
Viewers come for the reversal. You get a wronged mother, a child who was never supposed to matter, and a grandfather who has to face his own weakness. If you enjoy family dramas where the payoff is the public moment when everyone sees the truth, this one aims straight for that.
The banquet is the scene the whole setup builds toward, and the waiting is part of the pleasure. It suits a long evening when you want clear lines between who hurt whom and a heroine who refuses to stay quiet. Just don't expect subtlety in the villains. The show trusts the audience to enjoy watching them get caught.
